Whether it is a birthday party, a wedding anniversary or
any other big occasion, cakes are usually an integral part
of celebrations. However, professionally cooked cakes are
also the most expensive and take away a big chunk of the
party budget. Indeed they are sumptuous and great to look,
but are they really worth it? If the cake bill pinches you,
you might as well bake your own cake. Yes, it will not be
easy to match the decorated cakes of bakery, but with a
little practice you can surely make decorated cakes as fine
as the ones made in bakeries.
One aspect that sets bakery cakes apart from traditional
homemade cakes is their lovely edible flowers. These
flowers can be purchased from baking stores or online
companies, but again, they may be out of your budget.
Besides, you may not be able to find the specific color or
type of flower that will fit with your cake~s theme.
Making your own flowers is not that difficult, and soon you
will be producing a garden of edible flowers!
The first thing you need to make flowers is a flower nail
with a larger surface area and a flat round head. Cover the
head of the nail with a small square of waxed paper. This
is essential because this layer will help you remove the
flower easily and smoothly after it is done. You need to
guard against the possibility of the wax paper slipping off
the nail head. For that purpose apply a wee bit of icing
directly on the nail and the wax paper will stick to it
through the process of making the flower. For creating the
flower use a tip that is specific to the particular flower
you want to make.
Then hold the nail in the non-dominant hand, as the other
hand will be used to work the pastry bag. Then keeping the
flower nail at an angle of 90 degrees to the surface,
rotate the nail between fingers while piping. You can
choose the size of flower nail you need, depending on what
size of flower you want. Remember, a small number has a
larger size. A nail having number seven, for example, will
have a diameter of one and a half inch. A flower lifter is
another tool that you may like. It will help you remove
flower from the nail after the work is done. This looks
much like a pair of scissors.
You can go on practising with the flower nail till you
perfect the art of creating beautiful flowers for
decorating your cake. With a flower nail in your hand you
can let your imagination fly and create other things
besides flowers, such as characters and shapes.
Once you've learnt the art of using the flower nail
expertly, you will be creating unique things that will make
your cakes look different from the others.
